I know the primary is getting tough for both Hillary and Bernie. They both have different reasons for starting to get a little “nervous.” Hillary wants to start focusing on the general election. Bernie wants to snag more delegates. But, come on, we are the Democratic Party.
Both candidates are starting to sound more and more like Rubio & Cruz. Of course, I’m only exaggerating. Part of the reason the first debate was so impactful was because it showed a major contrast to the Republican debate. There were no insults, screaming matches, or degrading comments. It was quite the contrary, it was clear that the candidates respected each other and the American people enough to focus on the issues.
This week has been complete and utter mudslinging from both sides. Here’s a look at what Hillary said about Bernie:
"Bernie Sanders, by his own admission, has never even been a Democrat. So look, I understand they're getting anxious, I get that. But they need to be thoughtful about what they do say because at the end of the day, we need a Democratic president to succeed President Obama and to protect and further the progress that we've made under his eight years in office."
Calling Bernie out for not being a “democrat” is just plain ridiculous. He’s fought hard for issues that democrats believe in and he’s been a champion for many of the tough bills that we support. The title “democrat” itself does not mean much, at least to me. What matters is what you fight for and Bernie has fought long and hard for the democrats.
Now, here’s a look at what Bernie said about Hillary just hours ago:
"And she has been saying lately that she thinks that I am 'not qualified' to be president. Well, let me, let me just say in response to Secretary Clinton: I don't believe that she is qualified, if she is, through her super PAC, taking tens of millions of dollars in special interest funds. I don't think that you are qualified if you get $15 million from Wall Street through your super PAC."
First, Hillary never said he wasn’t qualified to be president. Interpretation of her words is up to anyone but this is just a plain exaggeration on his part. Second, whether or not Hillary gets money from a super PAC doesn’t mean she’s unqualified to be president. If that were the case, President Obama wouldn’t be qualified either. Bernie’s comment tonight was not only inflammatory but it is going to cause real divides within our own party.
My take: Both sides need to try and get back to the early stages of the election. We, democrats, don’t want bashing. We don’t want arguments. We want real debates on the issues.
